Great Jeans but not great fit

The jeans are gorgeous and I really wanted to keep them, but the waistband is much too tight. I bought my usual size 12 and the jeans looked stunning on except the waistband dug in and was difficult to button. Then tried a 14 but the hips were too big while the waistband was slightly less snug. In the end I returned the jeans quite disappointed.
