The waterproof layer is only good if you do need it (excessive drool, excessive sweat etc). For me, after trying 2 varieties of a waterproof pillow, I found my original cotton quilted protectors did a good job anyway. I found I could hear the light crunching of the waterproof pillow protector when I try to sleep. It's minor and I suppose I might get used to it eventually but its too noticeable for me. I also found that the pillow was "slippery" inside the waterproof case as there's no barrier between the waterproof material and the pillow to grip on, which is annoying when you change positions. The only good thing is this cover didn't add too much extra bulk to the shape of the pillow. I think I'll stick to my quilted cotton protectors for my pillows (silent and stay in place).
